Frivolous Friday

August 9, 2013

These reproduction push button light switches from House of Antique Hardware makes me happy. I really and truly want them throughout the house, but the price tag is a little scary.

Cost of the actual hardware aside, shipping itself is nearly $50. Outrageous. I'm going to have to poke around on the interwebs to see if I can perhaps find them cheaper, but I'm not going to count on it.

Frivolous Friday

July 11, 2013

I haven't done a Frivolous Friday post in quite awhile, because it honestly just feels like "filler" unless it's something I'm really excited about.

And this wallpaper from Anthropologie? It's got me excited. I can't stop thinking about it.

Even though there are butterflies on it, and I'm kind of afraid of butterflies (mostly it's moths, but really big butterflies are freaky too).

But back to the wallpaper. It's so unbelievably pretty, but I'd never have the guts to actually spend the money and put it up anywhere. I think I'd get sick of it far too quickly, and it's probably a little frilly for Mike's taste anyway.

I wish I could just buy a swatch instead of a whole roll. That would be ideal.

Have a good weekend!

Frivolous Friday - Things I Like But Not Enough to Pin

December 14, 2012

Last night, just as I laid my head down on my pillow, a little beep sounded off somewhere in the house. I thought I was tired enough to ignore it and just fall asleep. But, that wasn't the case.

At first I thought it was the smoke detector in the upstairs hall, just outside our bedroom. Apparently my hearing isn't that accurate, because it wasn't. But of course I had got up on a chair and used my phone to hit the battery hatch open because I'm just a wee bit to short to have reached it like a normal person.

I found that the carbon monoxide detector in the basement is what was making the noise. And apparently all I needed to do was shake it for it to miraculously find some battery juice and stop beeping. I took the batteries out anyway.

And that's the story of how I didn't get to sleep until after midnight, partially because I'm addicted to Tetris and can't stop playing it.

And now for something completely different, here are a bunch of things that I liked on Pinterest, because for some reason they weren't good enough to actually pin. Or something like that.

Frivolous Fabric Friday

July 13, 2012

Just a quick post for today...I'm in love with this fabric from Tonic Living. I have no idea where I'd use it, but I want it!

Frivolous Friday - Antique Light

April 27, 2012

I want this light with everything in my heart and soul.

I came across it yesterday, and it was lust at first click. Like, Fifty Shades of Grey lust.

I don't even know if the seller will ship to Canada. I'm afraid to ask because if they say yes I'll respond with "SEND IT RIGHT NOW". And if they say no, I'll probably offer up unsavoury favours or a first born child or something. Either way, I don't have $200 to spend on a light. Or a child to exploit.

I forced Mike to look at it, and his response was something along the lines of "it's okay" which is typically the closest we get to agreement on anything.

I would put it in the upstairs hall, and molest it with my eyes every day.

Blarg. Does anyone else ever fall head over heels in love with things?!

Frivolous Friday - They're Mine!

January 6, 2012

Happy Friday! I'm so glad this week is over - I really need a weekend.

Back in August, I posted about some quirky measuring cups from Anthropologie.

Well guess what? My wonderful future aunt-in-law (is that a thing?) bought them for me for Christmas! Thanks, Susan!

I did a little happy dance when I took off the wrapping paper and saw this:

Hooray!

All of the gifts we received were lovely and we're incredibly thankful for all of them.

Any one have any big plans this weekend? I'm heading to a new-to-me antique store tomorrow...

Frivolous Friday

December 9, 2011

If you read the last post, you know that I'm gearing up to make one of our spare bedrooms way more functional than it currently is. And the biggest step to doing that is giving the current bed the ol' heave-ho. In it's place, we're going to bring in a sofa-bed!

This is one Frivolous Friday feature that is most definitely going to be purchased.

At $799, this Ikea Manstad sofa-bed will be the most expensive thing we've purchased for the house so far(excluding the new oil tank we had to get last year). But, despite the cost, we (well, me, because Mike is essentially indifferent) like it for several reasons:
  • it will open up a ton of space, especially in the center, of the room
  • it has storage in the chaise end
  • it pulls out to a pretty generous "bed"
  • we like it enough to use in the living room, if/when we need to use this room as a bedroom again
It comes in two colours, and while on it's own I like the blue-gray (pictured) much better, I think the dark beige will work with the wall colour better. Just to make sure, I decided to check it out in Paint.

In real life, the trim colour leans more to white than how it's appearing above, so I think the dark beige sofa-bed is a better choice. I don't think the blue works quite right with the green of the walls, but I'm interested in hearing what other people think.

Before we can actually purchase the sofa-bed, a few things need to happen. We need to get rid of the old bed (at least the mattress and box spring - the frame we'll keep because it is easy to store and will likely come in handy some day) and I want to refinish the floor. Might as well get it done when the big furniture is out of the way!

In other news, today is my 25th birthday and I'm making Mike take me to The Simcoe County Museum's Christmas, Past and Present exhibit! I've also just discovered that the museum has a Victorian Wing...hooray for old things!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Frivolous Friday!

November 11, 2011

You can find previous Frivolous Fridays here.

I haven't done a Frivolous Friday in awhile, so I figured I'd do a double post today.

This week, I'm lusting after this light from Rejuvenation.

All of the light fixtures sold at Rejuvenation are customizable, and to have this looking the way I'd like for our bathroom (click the picture to see), it comes in at $285 before shipping and taxes. Ouch.

We're settling for something from the Big Orange Box, which is about a fifth of the price. But if money was unlimited (or at least flowed a little more freely), I'd be all over this one.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Frivolous Friday!

October 7, 2011

Hinges can be beautiful.

Yes, a totally mundane, necessary piece of hardware can be stunning.

And I want some.

Big, intricate, steeple tipped hinges.

But at $20 per hinge and up, it's not really in the cards. Sometimes I wish our simple farmhouse had of been built with a little more flair, and that we had some of these babies kicking around like so many other lucky old house owners.

I'm not giving up hope, however. I will continue to browse antique and salvage stores (online and in real life) looking for the elusive reasonably priced Victorian hinge!

Frivolous Friday!

September 23, 2011

Welcome to another Frivolous Friday post!

I've been jonesin' for this linen cabinet from Ikea for quite awhile. The simple lines are much more appropriate for our modest farmhouse than most frilly Victorian pieces. At a whopping $499, this is way out of our price range. At some point, I might try to bang together a similar something if I can find a suitable wardrobe or cabinet at a thrift store. With our bathroom reno plans finalized, I think we'll even have room for a linen cabinet! Hooray for storage!

Frivolous Friday - Candy Red Stacking Laundry Pair

August 19, 2011

For this week's Frivolous Friday, I'm going to write about my dream of having bright red laundry machines.

I love red. Red makes me happy. But, I can pretty much guarantee that it will never happen. Coloured washing machines are unbelievably expensive...being at least $500+ more than plain ol' white machines. Who knew? Probably everybody. Shush.

We thought we had found a set on sale in our price range. I was delighted! I had images of bright red machines in the corner of the room, and the back side of the door painted a matching bright red so that people would be like "Woah!" when they closed the door. Our laundry machines have to go in our bathroom, which is why visitors would ever be in the same room as the laundry.

But, it was not to be. So that dream has died.

But white will do. It's clean and bright and leaves a lot more room for colour choices!

Frivolous Friday - Fancy Measuring Cups

August 12, 2011

I've decided that on Fridays, unless I have something better to post, I'll write a quick little blurb about something I want for no reason other than I find it cute or attractive in some way. This is essentially going to serve as a way for me to remember all of the neat things I'd like to have someday - but not right now because our money is better spent elsewhere.

For today's Frivolous Friday, I'd like to show you this wicked measuring cup set from Anthropologie.

Source: Anthropologie.

Nevermind the fact that I already have two sets of perfectly functional measuring cups. I want these ones! They'll look cute on the counter, rather than stuffed in a drawer. Right?
