When we got possession of the house, one of the first things we did was paint the kitchen. On one of the window casings, on the wall closest to the original front door, there was a weird hollow knob. I just shrugged and covered it in paint so that it would blend in.
The casing is also in serious need of a paint touch up - the tape that held up the plastic sheet we had over it last winter was not nice to remove.
The random knob is pretty high up the wall. Our windows start about 2 feet from the floor, and are 5 feet high. The knob sits about 6-8 inches from the top of the casing.
If you like my window treatments, you can see how they're made here.
This past spring when I was removing a whole lot of caulking from the window frames, I noticed that there was another hollow knob on the exterior side of the window, protruding from the brick mold.
I just shrugged it off as a weird old house anomaly, and didn't think about it much more. Even on the outside of the house, it's pretty high up.
The other night I had a fit of the curiosities, and I wondered if there was a channel of sorts between the two knobs. And guess what? There is! How's that for an air tight, energy efficient house? Ha.
I've googled and googled, and I can't find a picture of something similar. I think I might know what it's for, but would love to hear guesses, no matter how off the wall they might be, from my readers!
I'm also going to post some pictures to the forum at Old House Web (there is an amazing amount of old house enthusiasts there) to see what the regulars there might think.
So come on, give it your best shot! I'll be back on Wednesday revealing my thoughts.
